Focus on the Child
During the spring months of 2007, Dillon Valley elementary school was the recipient of the “Focus on the Child” grant from the Summit Foundation. This grant along with funds from the parent–teacher organization enabled professional muralist, Bonnie Norling Wakeman to work with a group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on an important and educational mural project that was placed on an 8 x 30 foot wall adjacent to the Dillon Valley elementary library.
The mural incorporates the “learner profile” outline used in this dual language school to teach and encourage the kids to learn and grow with respect and cooperation with one another.
Bonnie used a group of the students as models and painted 75 children in the mural, reading, recreating and interacting in their school setting as well as writing out all the words from the “learner profile” and the school motto in English and Spanish.
In November of 2007, Dillon Valley Elementary school will present an unveiling of the mural and a plaque thanking the participants as well as the contributors. The public is invited and we look forward to seeing everyone as we celebrate this fun and beautiful permanent installation in a very exciting and progressive elementary school!
